Free Shipping Day: What to Expect at 10 Top Retailers

If you shop regularly at Amazon, Zappos or other stores that offer free shipping all the time, Free Shipping Day (Friday, December 16) doesn't sound all that exciting. Where it does come in handy is at stores where shipping is rarely free–mostly boutiques and smaller retailers. Other stores that regularly offer free shipping with a minimum purchase will dump the minimum purchase requirement on Friday in an effort to capture your last minute holiday spending dollar.

Details on the offers we'll see this are under wraps until Friday for the most part, but you can generally tell what a store's going to do by looking at what it did last year. Here are some Free Shipping Day events I'm looking forward to checking out based on last year's offers:

  • Disney Store. Disney Store offered free shipping on all orders last year.
  • Pottery Barn Kids. Last year PBK offered free shipping on everything except furniture.
  • 77Kids.com. All American Eagle-owned stores offered free shipping last year with no minimum purchase.
  • DiscoveryStore.com. Discovery Store offered free shipping with no minimum last year.
  • Crocs.com. Crocs offered free shipping plus a BOGO 50% off sale.
  • ToysRUs.com. This one will be interesting to watch. Last year TRU reduced the minimum purchase required for free shipping from $99 to $49. This year they've already been offering free shipping with a $49 purchase, so I predict they'll drop the requirement even further.
  • Kohls.com. Kohls offered free shipping with a $50 purchase last year. They may do the same this year, or they may do something slightly better since we've seen this deal from them already this holiday season.
  • LeapFrog.com. LeapFrog offered free shipping on all orders last year. There was a sale running, too.
  • Walmart.com. Last year Walmart participated by offering free shipping on select items. Like TRU, they've already been offering this deal. so we'll have to wait and see how they'll top it.
  • Target.com. Target offered free shipping on select items last year just like Walmart did. They'll sweeten the deal somehow this year.

A couple more things to note:

  • Some Etsy.com retailers will also offer free shipping on Friday.
  • To get your attention, some retailers will offer coupon codes and discounts in conjunction with free shipping.

Thanks, Baby Cheapskate
